What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disease that occurs in various areas of the central nervous system and causes memory, speech, thinking, cognitive and physical problems due to the loss of nerve cells and connections. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia with a rate of 60-80%. With the increase in the elderly population, the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease, like dementia, is expected to increase over time.

Alzheimer’s disease causes atrophy in the brain, causing the brain to shrink significantly. Plaques, especially in the memory section, are one of the important cellular symptoms of the disease.

Risk Factors for Alzheimer's Disease

As with most neurological diseases, Alzheimer’s disease has both modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors, namely genetic and environmental factors. Once risk factors are present in individuals, the likelihood of the disease occurring as a result of abnormal brain function increases. However, it should not be forgotten that not every symptom causes Alzheimer’s disease. Some of the negative effects of the natural aging process and the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease should not be confused with each other. A specialist consultation is required for a definitive diagnosis.

  • Advanced Age: It is the most important risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, but should not be confused with the symptoms that occur during the natural aging process. Alzheimer’s disease, which mostly occurs in people over the age of 65, can rarely be seen in people under the age of 65. Over 65 years of age, the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease doubles every five years.
  • Genetic Factors: Some familial gene mutations increase the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. First-degree relatives of Alzheimer’s patients are three times more likely to develop the disease.
  • Gender: According to studies conducted in our country, the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease is higher in women than in men. When we look at the reasons for this situation, it is thought to be due to the fact that women have a longer life expectancy, lower education level and more frequent depression.
  • Diabetes: Some scientific studies have shown that diabetes is a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease. Abnormal glucose metabolism, cellular dysfunctions, oxidative stress and changes in protein structures in diabetic patients make them more prone to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure): Changes in blood pressure can lead to cognitive dysfunction. In particular, unstable high blood pressure is recognized as an important risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Cardiovascular Changes: Pathologies of the cardiovascular system are important risk factors as they affect the blood flow to the brain. For example: Atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis
  • High Cholesterol: In middle-aged and older patients with high cholesterol, some of the vascular changes that occur in Alzheimer’s patients have been detected.
  • Central Obesity: It is thought that Alzheimer’s disease is more common in obesity types with more abdominal fat.
  • Depression: Approximately 45% of Alzheimer’s patients have depression and depression increases the cognitive impairment of Alzheimer’s disease. It is also known that the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease is higher in individuals who had depression before the age of 65.

Smoking/alcohol use, severe head trauma, history of stroke/stroke, sleep-disordered breathing, hearing loss, low level of social interaction, low education, intelligence and occupational attainment are also risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease.

According to scientific research, even the lowest intensity exercise (e.g. walking, leisure time activities) leads to significant reductions in the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Conscious and professional exercises reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s and Dementia diseases and provide significant improvements in the prognosis after the disease.

At Meva Hospice, we follow the course of the disease with our professional doctor, care and physical therapy services and make successful progress in the disease process with conscious exercises…
